‘Words Their Way is a teacher-directed, student-centred approach to vocabulary growth and spelling development whereby students categorise words using picture, pattern and meaning word sorts and activities. It caters for differentiated learning in the classroom, rather than a one-size fits all solution.’ Taken from Words Their Way brochure.
We have been participating in Words Their Way for a few years now, but it never ceases to amaze me. It is a program we use at MACC to teach the students spelling strategies. It is personalised and tracked as the students progress.
Today I wanted to share with you why I personally love Words Their Way. We have 5 groups in KD, each at varying levels. The students get to work at their own level and progress at their own pace.
I love the way spelling, phonics, and vocabulary are incorporated into the one program. I love the way the students can physically manipulate their spelling words and it’s not reliant on copying writing.
We use Words Their Way as part of our Monday Literacy Groups to help students understand how words work, as well as creative writing skills, handwriting and reading.
